- StatistikenWrenn Schmidt.
Although Stuhlbarg plays Clarke as perennially frustrated, he never lets his quiet politeness slip, although on several occasions, he hovers tantalisingly close.
Elsewhere, Daniels plays O'Neill as boisterous and foul-mouthed, who doesn't care about the feathers he has to ruffle to get what he wants.
Sarsgaard, on the other hand, plays Schmidt as the pretentious polar opposite; calm, patient, and insidious. Whereas O'Neill is all passion and rage, Schmidt is cold and emotionless.
Of course, the show does have problems. For one, there's almost nothing on why al-Qaeda hated the US so much one of Wright's main themes , and literally nothing on the group's background.
This kind of context is hugely important to any depiction of al-Qaeda, so for the series to offer us nothing on their origins is disappointing.
Elsewhere, a subplot in the first episode sees Chesney strike up a romantic relationship with Deb Fletcher Sharon Washington , chief of station for the US embassy in Nairobi.
The storyline is intended to give us an emotional connection to the bombing, but the plot is tonally divorced from everything surrounding it, coming across as emotionally inauthentic.
Along the same lines, the show is at its weakest when depicting O'Neill's labyrinthine personal life, Soufan's relationship with his girlfriend Heather Ella Rae Peck , and the tentative romance between Schmidt and Marsh.
Much of this material feels rote and generic, romantic subplots forced into the story so as to counter the testosterone-soaked main narrative although to be fair, Scheuer did marry Alfreda Bikowsky, on whom Marsh is partly based.
The most egregious problem, however, is the rigid binary distinction between the FBI and the CIA, wherein the FBI are the honourable team players whilst the CIA are the paranoid and duplicitous pseudo-villains, a distinction personified in O'Neill and Schmidt, and which never feels completely authentic.
O'Neill was far from perfect, but Schmidt is a dishonest, permanently smirking jerk, convinced of his own genius. To be fair, there can be little argument that Scheuer is a toxic and thoroughly arrogant individual, but there's also some nuance that Schmidt doesn't possess.
Nevertheless, The Looming Tower is taut, complex, and politically fascinating. Sure, the story is streamlined and simplified, but even so, it hasn't been drained of moral complexity, as it serves as a reminder of something with great importance today - with UBL literally telling the US that he was going to attack, everyone was focused on how a cigar was used as a toy.
And living, as we do, in an era where the American media is routinely distracted by irrelevancies, it seems the lessons of history have not been heeded.

That said, Osama comes across as a pathetic little man whom, for some bizarre reason, we have inflated to mythic proportions. He left a long trail of words that Wright has used effectively to build a comprehensive picture of the man that Afghans, in the fight against the Russians, thought was rather pathetic, but who was adopted by the United States and supported.
Another example of how certain actions taken for a variety of reasons can have long-range negative effects.
How one might ever develop the perspicuity to avoid making such mistakes remains a mystery to me. They had been concerned that the Islamic fundamentalists would try something spectacular but got little support from Washington.
After-note: Read a couple of the one-star reviews on Amazon to get a feel for psychotic thinking. Previously written: "Therefore when you induce others to construct a formation while you yourself are formless, then you are concentrated while the opponent is divided Therefore the consummation of forming an army is to arrive at formlessness.
When you have no form, undercover espionage cannot find out anything, intelligence cannot form a strategy.
I was reminded that Wright discussed Al Qaeda strategy at some length. It was quite simple. Bin Laden knew he couldn't maintain an attack on U.
And he has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. We send troops and treasure over to him to be whittled away at.
His first attempt to draw us in was the U. Cole; Clinton failed to fall into the trap as did Reagan after the Marines were killed in Lebanon.
Bush swallowed the bait hook, line and sinker. Iraq and Afghanistan have cost more than a trillion dollars of borroweded money in the first unfunded war in our history.
And we spend more hundreds of billions searching for the latest object in someone's crotch for the illusion of security. Wait till someone detonates a small bomb in a TSA security line or at a McDonald's.
We will then lose all our freedoms in the name of maintaining an empire we cannot afford. View all 8 comments. Jun 11, Dmitri rated it it was amazing Shelves: america , islam , middle-east , israel , egypt.
